Maybe somewhat old news for those of you that are fighting game fans, but I think it’s worth mentioning anyway.
Here are notes on it to consider:
- Eight additional characters including T. Hawk, Dee Jay, and a new characted named Juri
- Balance changes for existing characters (most likely Sagat will get nerfed)
- Improved online experience (could that mean quarter matches?)
- Retail release, but not full priced ($39.99 price point?)
- Bonus for those that hold onto original Street Fighter IV disc (alternate costumes is my guess)
- Not being released for arcades
I’m actually somewhat excited about this, since I may get back into Street Fighter with the hope that one of these eight new characters will be up my alley. I am surprised though that this is not coming out for arcades. There were already several console-only characters in the release of the original Street Fighter IV back in February so an arcade release of Super Street Fighter IV would have brought both the console and arcade versions back to parity. Instead, now we have the original Street Fighter IV in the arcades, but a suped up version for consoles with nearly double the characters as the arcade version and balance changes as well. Is Capcom really telling us that we shouldn’t be playing fighting games competitively in arcades anymore, but on consoles?

Haha, ironically, I feel like this is a ripoff! Making us pay for quarter matches that should have been there in the first place? Come on! Also, ODST was supposed to be “not full retail” but that didn’t turn out so well…
Anyway, when I read this news last week I got kind of annoyed…though I guess Capcom has been releasing future editions of its fighting games for years. Maybe I am just annoyed that I didn’t wait.
hopefully as with the trend of late, they’ll release at a lower-than-retail price, but then also go on sale shortly after release! maybe then I’ll finally get some mileage out of the SE fight stick that I spent so much longer procuring than actually playing… even tho I suck =(
The owner of my local arcade had to sell his original SF4 arcade boards because he wasn’t making a good enough return on them (I heard they cost about $12-13k each and you had to buy two for the multiplayer). A bunch of us complained that it was gone, so now he’s in the process of modding a PS3 into an arcade cabinet so we can play on that somehow.
So even though there may not be an official arcade release, arcade owners can hopefully make do some how.
I don’t think Capcom really cares whether or not the players play on arcade or on console, just so long as their products are getting bought. The players will just have to adapt and follow along if they really want to play the games. Like me – after all this time, my fighting game itch has been satisfied without a console, but I definitely need to get an xbox now before the year’s up so I can catch up to everyone in SF4 and then prepare for SSF4 haha.
I’m pretty confident the game will come out at reduced price. I mean there’s a lot of work involved in rebalancing the characters, but the last thing they want to do is fragment their online multiplayer base and upset the casual crowd.
Anyway Capcom recently stated that bringing SSF4 to the arcades isn’t out of the question, because a lot of people were obviously miffed. I think Capcom has been doing a pretty good job responding to fan requests.
Capcom also guaranteed at least 8 characters. Rumor is that there are 10. Tons more info:

you’re right – there’s definitely debate about whether or not this is another cash grab rip off type deal, since it’s possible that all of this could have been released as DLC. but since Capcom is already claiming that it will be a reduced price, I’m not going to hold it against them just yet. However…if they pull what Microsoft did with ODST and decide to charge full price for it, I probably won’t be picking it up.
