HDMI-Cable

Having recently picked up another 360 (courtesy of Amazon), I was surprised to discover that even the Jasper chipset, with its new graphics chip and internal memory, still has not fixed the 360 HDMI No Signal issue. This issue has been plaguing me ever since the 360 was released with HDMI support years ago and is present for anyone that tries to hook up a 360 to a TV with an HDMI cable lacking 1080p support.

Here is what happens. When you connect a 360 to a TV with HDMI for the first time, the 360 sets your display type to 1080p. It’s like something was written into the operating system that if you connect a 360 to a TV with an HDMI cable for the first time, the 360 will automatically set the display settings to 1080p. Well, for those of us that don’t have TVs with 1080p, that becomes a problem. You want to use HDMI, but you can’t connect with it because any time you do, the 360 automatically sets itself to 1080p when what you desire is actually 720p or 1080i. What you end up seeing is that your 360 is on, but the TV doesn’t detect the signal nor do you hear any sound. If you ask people that aren’t intimately familiar with this specific problem, they’ll tell you to check the HDMI cable, the 360, etc. Don’t listen to them.

The only possible solution to this problem is to blindly navigate into the Display settings to change the display to something other than 1080p without any sort of visual or audio cue. Very annoying, but doable.

Here’s a step by step guide:
1. Connect your 360 to your TV with the included composite cable.
2. Set up your 360 to make sure that you are running the new Xbox dashboard (the one with Avatars support).
3. Ensure that there is no profile that will auto-sign in when you boot up.
4. Boot up the 360 and wait for about 20 seconds.
5. Hit right on your left analog stick 9 times, to navigate to the System Settings menu.
6. Hit A 4 times to go through the System Settings menu, Console Settings menu, Display menu, into the HDTV settings menu.
7. Hit up on your left analog stick up twice, and then hit A. If no picture appears, wait about 10 seconds. Then hit up on the analog stick again and hit A. What you are doing is trying to pick one of the Display settings other than 1080p.
8. If your picture shows up, you’re good to go. Set your Display settings to either 720p or 1080i and the 360 will remember them from now on.
9. If the picture still fails to set up, try restarting the machine and repeating steps 1-8 again.

Troubleshooting
Try switching back to the composite cable, turning on the 360, and doing steps 1-8 above to see if you are doing it correctly. If your profile is logged in, the 360 will start you on the “Welcome” tab, rather than the “Play Disc” tab, which will not allow you to get to the System Menu without hitting up once first before the 9 rights.

    This is awesome man. TYVM.

Ridiculous that you have to do that though. With all the tech in that machine you think they could have it auto detect. Great instructions!

I was having the same problem, all I had to do was shut down the xbox with the A/V cable connected. Then I disconnected the stock A/V cable, and connected my HDMI cable to the xbox and TV. Started up, worked no problem. Hope this helps.

    This worked perfectly!

My xbox always starts on the welcome tab whether I’m signed in or not, so I had to push Up once, *held* Right for a few seconds (as settings is on the far right), pressed A four times, then pressed Up once and press A again (to select 1080i, if you want a lower resolution press up more times).

My TV does 1080P but my 360 through HDMI works sometimes and then fails other times…. its a headache… I just went back to component cables since I see no difference. I think my problem is with some kind of interference between 360 and HDTV

Hi you don’t happen to have a LG LED TV, do you ?

Our Xbox makes the tv turn itself off, go all black still powered on and sometimes freeze. All these various things happens every other day, after approx an hour of playing. Then it happens again and again…

What about setting your xbox up for whatever resolution YOUR TV can handle, on someone elses 1080P HD TV? Then once you swap to your TV Its already setup for that resolution ready to go.

    Question.

I have a monster HDMI cable as well as a 1080p TV yet I still can’t get a signal.. I’ve tried blindly navigating through the menu but that still doesn’t seem to work. I’ve hooked my Xbox 360 up to other TV’s in my house and turned everything as low as possibly then switching over to my new TV and nothing changes. Idea’s anyone? My TV is brand new and my Xbox 360 is only a year old.
