We’re dancing!

I had planned to pick up Alpha Protocol when it was released last year, but middling reviews caused me to pass. One Steam sale later, I am the proud owner of Alpha Protocol, and over the past two weeks I’ve gotten the chance to take the game out for a spin. Did this spy RPG deserve all the criticism it received?

Yakuza 3 brings the popular Japanese franchise into HD.

Yakuza 3 was one of the first PS3 games I played through and beat, but I never got around to writing a review on it. I recently picked up Yakuza 4, and I told myself that before I could even start playing Yakuza 4, I would finish this review so here we go. The Yakuza series is very popular in Japan, as it’s pretty much the Japanese version of our GTA games. It’s somewhat open-ended but a lot more linear and smaller in scope than the Grand Theft Auto games, but in the Yakuza games you tend to play the role of a Yakuza member who has a good heart. Yakuza 3 is the first Yakuza game on the PS3, and having never played the first two games, I’ll share my thoughts on it as a first time player of the franchise.

Ratchet & Clank find themselves in trouble once again in their first PS3 outing, Tools of Destruction

The next stop on my backlog tour is Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction – another PS3 exclusive. It’s been nearly seven years since I last played a Ratchet & Clank game, and back in those days of the PS2 I was certainly a huge fan of the series. Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction was released only one year after the PS3 debuted, and was the first PS3 game to support Dual Shock rumble right out of the box. But like the other PS3 games I’ve been playing lately that were released early on in the PS3 lifecycle – the question to be asked is whether it is still worth checking out today. Hit the jump to find out.

HEY! Why are you still playing LA Noire!?

Unfortunately, I’m getting pretty sick of LA Noire, so this review might be a little tainted. Reefer Madness is an amazing name for a piece of DLC, so it’s unfortunate I’ve gotten tired of LA Noire’s gameplay. Still, if you still want more LA Noire (or have the Rockstar Pass), Reefer Madness isn’t a bad way to go.

In Resistance: Fall of Man, WW2 never happened as you fight against alien invaders

Resistance: Fall of Man is the next game I’ve just beaten as I continue to make my way through my backlog. This game was released as a PS3 launch title back in November 2006 from Insomniac Games, the studio most famous for Spyro and the Ratchet & Clank series. Unlike the light-heartedness of Spyro and Ratchet games, Resistance is a more serious shooter based on an alternate universe in 1950′s Britain where both the Americans and the British fight off an alien invading race referred to as the Chimera.

Dragon Age 2 continues the bloodletting with more of an emphasis on action combat.

As a big fan of Bioware’s RPGs for this console generation (Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect, and Mass Effect 2), Dragon Age 2 was a no-brainer purchase for me. Despite its criticisms of not being as good as its predecessor, I took the plunge anyway so I could see for myself whether the series took a turn for the worst. Hit the jump for my thoughts now that I’ve completed the game.

There is a healthy bit of destruction in Nicholson Electroplating

LA Noire’s third piece of downloadable content, Nicholson Electroplating, is probably the weakest. I feel like it has the least follow through of any of the DLCs, even though there are some good parts. As part of the Rockstar Pass, it’s still worth playing, although I probably wouldn’t pay for it on its own.

Does Heavenly Sword, a game from 2007, have enough going for it to still be enjoyable today?

I’ve been steadily working my way through my backlog, and with recently making good progress in my PS3 backlog (Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, and Killzone 3), I decided to make my way through another: Heavenly Sword. Granted, this game was originally released in 2007, but I wanted to check it out since I have the next game that Ninja Theory developed, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, still in my backlog. The crazy news that Ninja Theory is also the studio behind the next Devil May Cry game also had me curious to see what they were capable of. Does Heavenly Sword still hold up today for a 2007 game?

The Sacrifice and The Passing both center around a drawbridge – seen from different sides of it

After picking up Left 4 Dead 2 on a Steam sale, I finally got the one thing I’ve been missing: DLC. I’ve always been too cheap to pay for the DLC on Xbox, but reading about the Sacrifice and the Passing has always intrigued me. Finally, I got the chance to check out these two pieces of DLC. Since the DLC was free, the price was definitely right, but do these two pieces of content do justice to the Left 4 Dead name?

Iconic characters like Scorpion and Kung Lao return in the latest Mortal Kombat

This year, we saw the return of a new Mortal Kombat game. Simply titled “Mortal Kombat”, it’s actually the 9th game in the series but this new 2011 version of “Mortal Kombat” brings the series to its more glorified days and pretty much forgets Mortal Kombat 4 through 8. For many of us that grew up with Mortal Kombat, the first three games were the ones that defined the series, so it’s nice to see this new Mortal Kombat go back for a reboot similar to what Street Fighter 4 did for Street Fighter. Hit the jump to see how I felt the game turned out.
