For any hardcore or old-school gamer, Capcom is one of the biggest bright spots in the gaming industry. With franchises like Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Mega Man, Dead Rising, and Phoenix Wright, it just seems like they have a great portfolio of games that gamers want to play. But recently, I’ve started to get a little bit peeved over their various decisions but it wasn’t until this past week that I feel like they’ve really sold out. Let’s examine the evidence.

Between Starcraft II and Super Street Fighter IV, the winner is no surprise.

A couple months back I had talked about how excited I was for playing Super Street Fighter IV and Starcraft II – two of the most hardcore competitive games that hit this year. During May and June, I had my hands full with both the Starcraft II beta and the retail release of Super Street Fighter IV. While I juggled my time back then playing both games, as the summer went on I found myself drifting more and more away from Super Street Fighter IV. Now that Starcraft II is out, the relationship I have with Super Street Fighter IV is definitely over – even though I think we can still be friends.

Is it even possible to play all of these significant games/betas this month?

Last month I posted a gaming schedule for April, and I think it worked out pretty well. I was able to make my way through Final Fantasy XIII, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Dante’s Inferno, and surprisingly, Army of Two: The 40th Day. A couple weeks ago, I posted a different entry discussing games that I wouldn’t mind paying a monthly fee for. But now that May is underway, I’ve realized that maybe being able to play all four games I was willing to pay monthly fees for at the same time is perhaps a bit too much – on top of Mass Effect 2, which carried over from last month. So, what the heck do I do in May?! Read on as I postulate my gaming schedule for the rest of the month.

Super Street Fighter IV sees the return of old favorites, such as Street Fighter III’s Makoto.

Like the original Street Fighter IV, I’ve spent enough time with Super Street Fighter IV that I can already give it a review. After all, it’s a fighting game that doesn’t have much of a single player component to play through right? Super Street Fighter IV is the expansion/sequel to last year’s Street Fighter IV. With Super feeling more like an expansion, I’m only going to cover the new stuff in this review. Check out my writeup for the original if you want to know why Street Fighter IV and Super are so good. The question now is, what does Super Street Fighter IV bring to the table and is it worth it?

How do cmfl3x’s thoughts on Super Street Fighter IV & Starcraft 2 differ from espion4ge’s?

Yesterday, espion4ge wrote about his experiences trying to conquer hardcore games these days, and today I will do the same, albeit from a different perspective. I played tons of Starcraft in college as well, but I probably was never as good and usually would win more because of brains then because of actions per minute. That’s not to say I am very smart – it’s more like the only chance I ever had to win was to out-think an opponent, which sometimes was pretty rare. Anyway, when it comes to Street Fighter, my previous idea of strategy can be found here. So while I am finding myself relearning Starcraft in the sequel, for Street Fighter, it’s like I’m seeing the game for the first time, which is pretty cool.

Learning to play Starcraft II & Super Street Fighter IV at the same time is rough stuff!

cmfl3x and I are both caught up in the Starcraft II beta and Super Street Fighter IV as of late, so we decided to each write about how we’re doing and feeling with regards to both games. Considering the two of us are writing as aging hardcore gamers, Starcraft and Street Fighter are probably among the most hardcore games you can possibly play. In each game, you’re primarily pit against a single opponent (at least, for 1v1 in Starcraft II) where your objective is to destroy your opponent. Whether you want to settle a score with another player in a couple minutes or several, it doesn’t matter as apparently both games have gotten my adrenaline pumping and give me trouble falling asleep at night when I play too close to bedtime. It’s hard to believe that 10 years ago my buddies and I were playing Starcraft on the PC and Marvel vs. Street Fighter on the Saturn back in college. Read on for my thoughts and progress on the next major games in both universes.

Games like Modern Warfare 2 and Starcraft 2 are worth more than their retail price.

Having now completed the 8 hour game that is Dante’s Inferno, I’ve started thinking more about the crazy idea that this game retails for the same price as a game like Modern Warfare 2. With Modern Warfare 2′s Stimulus Package earning millions and millions of dollars amidst some complaining about the expensive $15 price tag, analysts have discovered that the $15 price tag was actually too low, since sales were higher than expected at that price. Maybe $20 would have been the sweet spot? In any case, it has gotten me thinking as of late about the disparity between the value of games. Are all games created equal? Of course not. Yet why are they all charging $60? I guess it works because in the end, games that are more than worth the $60 retail price will continue to sell like hotcakes while games that are not worth it will sell far less quantities. Game studios will make more for games that are worth more, but is it the best pricing strategy?

I may sound crazy when I say this, but I am actually willing to pay a monthly fee for certain games. Now this may sound ridiculous since why would someone offer to pay more for something when he’s already getting it cheaper? If I can play Modern Warfare 2 online for free already, why am I suggesting that I don’t mind paying for it? Because it’s one of the most entertaining games I’ve played in recent history that continues to captivate me month after month while other games get beaten and put back on the shelf or sold. Read on for the list of games being released this year (and Modern Warfare 2) that I would consider paying a monthly fee for and why.

Trying to get through Final Fantasy XIII, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Dante’s Inferno, and Mass Effect 2 before the end of the month is shaping up to be a bit ambitious…

I’m bad. My backlog continues to balloon even though I thought I solved this problem before. Now with the entire PS3 exclusive library (pretty large, actually) going to be a part of my backlog later this month, I have to seriously figure out what I’m going to do. Apparently I can’t stop myself from buying games that go on sale, so the next best thing I can do is to try to make an estimate of what I will be playing over the course of the next month and come up with some realistic goals to give myself some sort of control. Read on for what I am forecasting my gaming time to be within the month of April…
